Bio farming

thumb_sunflowerIn Europe, organic cover crops, for the time being, only one quarter of the continent's agricultural area. Although organic crops occupy only 1.5% of the agricultural potential of the country, Romania is positioned in the first half of the world ranking.

In terms of area cultivated in an organic system, our country occupies the 44th position from a total of 122 countries, according to the publication "The world of organic agriculture in 2008", which elaborates an annual world statistics in this domain.

At EU level, Austria (13%) and Italy (9%) have an organic farming area of higher agricultural potential, but countries like France (2%), Belgium (2.1%), Hungary (2.9 %) or Spain (3.7%) are not much better than us.

According to data of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (MAFRD), in 2008, organic cultivated area in our country was 15% higher than in 2007, reaching 220,000 hectares.

agricultura-bioIn line with strategy development of organic farming in Romania, cultivated area will reach at the end of 2009 about 300,000 hectares, which would represent about 2% of the total agricultural area of the country.

In 2007 were exported to markets in Germany, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Netherlands and France about 80,000 tons of organic products, which means almost half of domestic production. The value of exports totalized 65 million euros. Last year, Romania exported about 130,000 tons of organic products with a value of 100 million euros. Romania exported cereals, oilseeds, berries and mushrooms, processed milk products and honey. But imported brown sugar cane sugar, coffee, chocolate, soy products and fruit juices. The value of imports in 2007 was 3 million, with one million more than in 2006.

Farmers around the world should begin to practice as soon as possible a more sustainable and more productive agriculture to feed the rising demands of the worldwide population and to combat climate changes.
